Giriş:
The incidence of anxiety in pediatric patients has been estimated to be over 50% (1). Preoperative anxiety may cause anesthesia induction difficulties, intraoperative hemodynamic instability, increased pain, and emergence agitation (2). Video-sharing websites are widely used web-based mobile applications. This study aims to assess the impact of watching short videos in the preoperative waiting area on preoperative anxiety.

Gereç ve Yöntem:
This prospective, randomized study was approved by the Medical Ethics Committee of Ondokuz Mayıs University on March 10, 2022 (Approval no: 2022/102). Children between 5 and 12 years old with an ASA score of 1 or 2 scheduled for elective surgery were randomly assigned to a short video (SV) or control (C) group. All children were taken to the preoperative waiting area with their parents. While the children in the SV group were allowed to view short videos of their own choice, the children in the control group were not. The primary outcome of the study was children’s anxiety scores assessed with The modified Yale Preoperative Anxiety Scale (mYPAS) after watching the short videos just before being taken to the operating room.

Bulgular:
All subjects had similar anxiety scores at admission to the preoperative waiting area (p = 0.571). The mYPAS scores just before being taken to the operating room were significantly lower in the video group compared to the control group (p 0.001). Furthermore, on entering the operation room and before induction, the mYPAS scores were also lower in the video group (p 0.001).

Tartışma ve Sonuç:
It was found that watching short videos for 20 minutes in the preoperative waiting room reduced anxiety scores and had better emerge delirium scores. Watching short videos in the preoperative waiting room is an effective method of reducing preoperative anxiety, in pediatric patients aged 5 to 12 years.
