The Comparison of the effects of Gabapentin and Pregabalinon wound healing in rat

INTRODUCTION: Gabapentinoids are effective adjunt drugs for reducing postoperative pain. However, the effects of gabapentinoids on wound healing are not evaluated yet. In this study we evaluted their effects on wound healing. MATERIAL-METHODS: Seventeen male Wistar-Albino rats, 250-350 g were divided into three groups randomly: Control Group (n=5, 2 Ml saline), Gabapentin Group (n=6, 20mg kg-1 Gabapentin) and Pregabalin Group (n=6,20mg kg-1 Pregabalin). The dorsal surface hair all rats was shaved bilaterally and disinfected. Two cm skin insicion was made to the right side of the dorsum of all the rats and then sutured with 2-0 prolene and 2 mattress suture in sterile conditions. One and a half cm diameter circle shaped full thickness skin patch removed from the left side of the dorsum of all the rats and dressed with sterile gauzes. All the surgical procedures were performed under aseptic conditions.Sutures at the incision sites of all the rats were removed at 9. Day and sampling done from the scar tissue under anesthesia (with same anesthesia protocol) for histopathological evaluation. Rats were sacrified with IP thiopental 150 mg kg-1 and tissue sampling done from scar tissue at 21 day. Circle shaped scar tissue healing also evaluated by copying the scar shape on asetate and calculating the surface area at 1,3,5,7, 9,11,13,15,17, 19 and 21 days. RESULTS: Until 13th day inflammation scores were significantly lower (P<0.05) and wound healing was significantly better when compared with Gabapentin and Pregabalin groups(P <0.001). Inflammation scores were significantly lower in Pregabalin group when compared with Gabapentin group until 13th day. CONCLUSION: Wound healing was significantly better in Gabapentin group than Pregabalin Group between 13th and 21th day. In conclusion when gabapentin and pregabalin compared, although pregabalin decreases inflammation scores lesser than gabapentin, gabapentin has better results in wound healing.
