Benzydamine Gargle versus Ketamine Gargle for Postoperative Sore Throat

AIM: The aim of this study is to compare the effects of two different therapies for postoperative sore throat retrospectively. Our secondary aim is to determine the correlation of smoking and postoperative sore throat via visual analog scale scores. MATERIAL-METHOD: We searched for the patients diagnosed as “postoperative sore throat” from hospital database between January 2012 and January 2016. The files of the patients, who had severe sore throat (VAS > 5) after tracheal intubation for laparoscopic cholecystectomy, were analyzed retrospectively. The patients treated with either benzydamine hydrochloride gargle or ketamine gargle were included into the study. The patients’ age, sex, smoking stories, VAS scores at the first, 24th and 48th hour and the chosen therapy were recorded according to nurse care records. RESULTS: 122 patients were included into the study. There were no significant differences for age, sex, smoking habits and the VAS scores in the postoperative first hour amoung the therapy groups. Mean VAS score was 2.8±0.83 in ketamine group and 3.3±0.99 in benzydamine group at the postoperative 24th hour (p < 0.05). At postoperative 48th hour, it was 1.06±0.756 in ketamine group and 1.5±0.718 in the benzydamine group (p < 0.05), At all time points, mean VAS scores were similar amoung smoking and non smoking patients (p > 0.05) DISCUSSION: Post operative sore throat is a widespread complication of anesthesia leading to discomfort of patients and delay in the recovery. Benzydamine hydrochloride is the most common NSAID used for the therapy of portoperative sore throat, while ketamine is a NMDA receptor antagonist and believed to play a local role in reduction of postoperative sore throat. CONCLUSION: We found ketamine gargle more effective then benzydamine gargle for attenuation of postoperative sore throat. Whereas we couldn’t find any significant effect of smoking on postoperative sore throat.
